jax-state-top-colleges.jpgJacksonville State University continues to solidify its role as one of the state’s leading institutions for college-bound students, ranking fourth in the number of Alabama high school graduates enrolled for Fall 2024. The data, published by AL.com and sourced from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE), places Jax State just behind the state’s largest universities—Alabama, Auburn, and UAB—despite having a significantly smaller student body.

With a total enrollment of 9,955 students in Fall 2024, Jax State's influence stands out when compared to much larger institutions: the University of Alabama enrolled 40,846 students, Auburn enrolled 34,145, and UAB enrolled 20,904. Yet Jax State remains one of the top destinations for students graduating from Alabama high schools, demonstrating its growing appeal and influence across the state.

In addition to its statewide showing, Jacksonville State was the number one choice among high school graduates in four Alabama counties: Calhoun, Cleburne, St. Clair, and Talladega. The university's strong regional presence continues to be a point of pride and reflects its commitment to accessibility and community-based education.

"To be the fourth-most chosen university by Alabama high school students is a point of pride for Jax State," said Jax State President Dr. Don C Killingsworth, Jr. "We're committed to providing an accessible, high-quality college experience—especially for students from our surrounding communities, where we continue to see tremendous support and growth."

The data also illustrates a broader trend of rising enrollment across Alabama's public universities, with a 2.6% increase in overall headcount statewide. Jacksonville State continues to grow alongside this trend, thanks to strategic recruitment efforts, new academic offerings, and a campus environment that resonates with students and families.

ACHE's annual report provides a snapshot of where recent high school graduates are choosing to begin their higher education journeys. Jax State's position near the top of the list signals continued strength in attracting in-state students. As the Friendliest Campus in the South, Jacksonville State's balance of affordability, personal attention, and academic quality continues to make it a top choice for Alabama students.
