Dr. Douglas Stephens, lead faculty for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) program at Jacksonville State University, has been accepted into the Academy for Clinical Instructors and Preceptor Excellence (CAPES) at Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. This year-long program, hosted by one of the nation's top nursing schools, equips participants to support students in underserved areas with the skills to thrive in the ever-changing healthcare landscape.
"This program cultivates and develops the next generation of healthcare providers and leaders," Dr. Stephens said. "It will help us evolve by learning and implementing innovative techniques and sharing those experiences with that faculty at Jax State, as well as preceptors from surrounding hospitals."
Stephens also pointed out how competitive acceptance into CAPES is. "It's offered in eight states across the Southeast United States, and only four people are accepted from each state. Being accepted was exciting and an honor."
Stephens returned on Nov. 10 from his first intensive session in Atlanta. The program is a hybrid with both online and on-site courses. Participants will also attend national conferences throughout the year. "It's a great way to connect with our network with professionals in academia and healthcare," he said.
Director of Academic Resources Tammy Johnson said Dr. Stephens will contribute to CAPES's mission and bring new perspectives and ideas to enhance the program. "His acceptance into this prestigious program underscores his dedication to advancing the nursing profession and addressing critical healthcare needs in the Southeast," she said. "His commitment to healthcare excellence will undoubtedly inspire and lead the next generation of nursing professionals, motivating us all to strive for excellence in our field."
Dr. Stephens' participation in CAPES reflects Jax State's commitment to fostering leadership and innovation in nursing education, ensuring students and faculty alike are equipped to meet the challenges of modern healthcare.
