Sophomore Honor Society Builds Beds for Children in Need

Sophomore honor society, Lambda Sigma, leads an effort to build 60 beds for underserved children in Calhoun County.
“As I reflect on our efforts, my soul rejoices,” said LaQuez Weed, Lambda Sigma president. “Choosing to focus our efforts on this overlooked issue was a decision driven by compassion and desire for a tangible change…our work exemplified the difference people can make when you put yourself aside for just minute for the sake of a greater good. Humanity is NOT dead.”
Over the past four years, the chapter has partnered with other student organizations and the Jacksonville community to raise more than $18,000 to build over 190 beds. This year, they raised $4,700 to build 60 beds, with support from the Student Financial Management Association, Black Student Union, Student Social Work Club, Freshman Forum, McDonald’s of Jacksonville, Texas Roadhouse of Oxford, Calhoun County Rotary Club and Jacksonville First United Methodist Church.
“This drive is a beautiful example of volunteering and selflessness, which I believe our chapter did an excellent job at executing this year,” said Lambda Sigma vice president, Ashlyn Smith, who helped coordinate the event. “As a chapter, we have felt a great accomplishment by completing this drive and are honored that we get to participate in it yearly. We hope the wonderful children that receive these beds have peace and a comfortable spot to lay their head at night.”
